Shopkeepers and residents from Panjim are peeved at theincrease in the height of city roads and have demanded authorities to applytheir mind in reducing the road height.
The recent carpeting of the roads is one glaring examplewhere authorities have blindly hotmixed roads, increasing its height andleaving motorists flustered while negotiating sudden depressions on the roads.
The height of the city roads in the city which is around twofeet above ground level has created problems for shopkeepers and residentsespecially during the monsoon.
During the monsoon rainwater enter the shops, as the heightof roads has increased.
The shopkeepers have warned that they will agitate if theheight of the road is not reduced and proper drainage is not made for the waterto move out by next monsoon.
Due to the increase in road height the distance between theroad surface and footpaths have reduced, which could actually give rise tountoward incidents.
A local corporator has said that the flooding in the city,which is caused due to rising road heights and faulty drains, will be restoredby coming monsoon.
“I will propose future hotmixing of city roads only afterexcavating the older layer,” said Vaidhehi Naik, CCP Mayor.
Many of the roads in Panjim are in good condition but arehotmixed time and again. And there are some roads like Rua de Ourem which istotally neglected, some residents of Mala pointed out.
“A technology called jet patch is used for filling potholes.So if there are few pot holes on a road it is not necessary to hotmix the road.Jet patching could solve the problem,” said Shilpa Joshi, a resident of Panjim.
Every hotmixing increases the road height by 5 inches, sheadded.
“For last so many years we have been demanding properplanning of our city,” Prakash Kamat, a shopkeeper said.
According to him there should be uniform height of roads atleast in the capital city, which can be an example for the rest of the state.
Ismail Khan a Campal-based businessman has said that thegovernment should now concentrate on preparing a proper drainage system todivert water from the city during the monsoon.
