After an unsuccessful attempt at establishing a toe-hold in the Goan market several years ago during the tenure of former chief minister the late Manohar Parrikar, Surat-based SUMUL Dairy co-operative is once again attempting to pick a share of the Goan dairy market with investment proposals.
Sources in the government said, officials of SUMUL Dairy have met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to discuss the proposal.
New investment proposal involves setting up of a state-of-the-art plant with a daily production capacity of two-lakh litres of milk and the Surat based Dairy has sought land on lease in industrial areas.
The initiation of discussions by the Surat Dairy at the top governmental level, meanwhile, is expected to ruffle a few feathers within the management of Goa's own apex dairy co-operative, the Goa State Milk Producers Union Ltd commonly known as Goa Dairy.
Several years ago, when SUMUL Dairy got into negotiations with the Goa government for a similar foray, dairy farmers and the management of Goa Dairy had raised objections. After a few months of operations, SUMUL had then made a quiet exit.
