Two fishing workers arrested for killing unknown co-worker

Accused confess to assaulting victim with stone

PANAJI

The Porvorim police arrested two persons in connection with the murder of an unidentified man whose body was found below the Old Mandovi Bridge in Malim last Saturday.

The accused identified as Krishna Pradhan, aged 18 years, and Narayan Singh, 23, from Jharkhand, were taken into custody after confessing to assaulting the victim with a laterite stone following an altercation.

As per Superintendent of Police (North Goa) Akshat Kaushal, the accused persons came in contact with the deceased on the fateful day and they entered into an argument and subsequent assault while they were having drinks at a shed.

The police team had found a man, aged around 30 years, lying outside the fish-selling shed in the jungle area below Old Mandovi Bridge at Malim. The team noticed severe head injuries and a bloodstained laterite stone.

“On observing the spot, it was revealed that there was a fight between the deceased and accused person. Empty liquor bottles, empty disposal glasses, water bottle, etc were found lying on the floor in the shade. During the investigation, our team apprehended the two persons, who were employed as labourers on fishing boats. During interrogation, they confessed to having met the deceased on the day of the incident, sharing drinks and subsequently had a fight which led to the man’s death,” the officer revealed.

The accused came to Goa in August 2024 after the fishing season resumed. Police efforts to confirm the victim's identity are underway. Kaushal stated that one aspect which helped in solving the case was the detailed records of all labourers maintained at the Betim Outpost.

“When the police caught the accused, they were in an inebriated state… they were not able to reveal their backgrounds such as place of stay etc. At this stage, the police were able to get all the information verified by cross-checking it with the information being kept in their register,” he said.
