One pedestrian died while the other sustained grievous injuries when both of them were knocked down by a truck near the SCERT building at Porvorim on Monday around 8.30 am.
According to Porvorim police, a truck was proceeding from Panaji towards Mapusa when the truck driver, who was under the influence of alcohol, knocked down two pedestrians, Krishnandan (Balu) Chandan Dev Prasad (40) from Uttarakhand and Shashibushan Kumar Paramandanday Ray (45) from Bihar, near the SCERT building.
Following the accident, the truck driver attempted to flee the scene, but a crowd of onlookers apprehended him and handed him over to the police.
While Dev Prasad succumbed to his injuries while being taken to Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim for treatment, Ray, who has sustained fractures, is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Police have arrested the truck driver, Umesh Sah (46) from Bihar, on charges of rash and negligent driving, and PSI Akash Chodankar is investigating the case.
