Quepem Police have arrested the accused, Sweth Gaude, and also booked firearm owner Shyam Gaonkar in connection with the death of a young woman following a gunshot incident at Kazur ward of Cavrem-Pirla village on Sunday.
The accused was produced before the JMFC Court at Quepem and has been remanded to four days’ police custody for further investigation.
According to police sources, Sweth Gaude of Antershe-Pale allegedly fired a shot from a firearm owned by Shyam Gaonkar, a resident of Kazur. The bullet struck the victim, Tanvi Ghadi, on the left side of her neck, resulting in grievous injuries to which she later succumbed.
The weapon used in the incident is reported to be a locally made rifle, typically used for the protection of agricultural lands.
Sources further informed that the occupants of the house have claimed that they were not present at the time of the incident and had gone to the market.
The incident has raised serious concerns regarding how the accused gained access to the firearm and the safety of keeping such weapons in accessible locations, particularly within residential areas.
