Two plantations estimated at about Rs 3.5 lakh were destroyed in separate fire incidents in Canacona taluka on Friday and Saturday.
According to the Canacona fire services, a cashew plantation caught fire at Dhupemolol (New Waddo), Bhatpal, on Saturday, destroying a cashew plantation valued at about Rs 50,000. The plantation belongs to Alex Fernandes and Mary Fernandes, informed Fire personnel.
In a major fire incident on Friday, a sugarcane plantation at Edda-Cotigao got destroyed, before fire services could reach the site.
Fire services pegged the loss at over Rs 3 lakh and the sugarcane plantation belonged to state award-winning farmer Prasad Velip.
Sources further informed that a short-circuit in an open electricity overhead alignment passing through the plantation is believed to have started the fire.
Agriculture officers on Saturday inspected the plantation to take stock of the mishap, sources added.
