CANACONA: Two panchas reportedly backed by the BJP panel are set to contest the post of Poinguinim sarpanch on Wednesday.
The Canacona BDO has convened a special meeting on Wednesday to elect a new sarpanch, as the post fell vacant after former sarpanch Mahesh Naik, who is also BJP Canacona block president, had resigned after being elevated as deputy chairman of Goa Horticulture Corporation.
According to sources, Panch Vallabh Tense is a strong contender to the post and had even reportedly relinquished the post of deputy sarpanch some months ago.
However, since Naik's resignation as sarpanch, two-time panch Jagdish Tawadkar has also staked claim to the top post.
Incidentally, both belong to Tawadkar's panel and are also prominent BJP party workers.
“Any failure to appoint a new Poinguinim sarpanch in an unanimous manner will expose an alleged rift within the party workers,” a source told The Goan.
