Demolition of illegal structures along the Arambol coast continued for the second day, as authorities razed three more structures on Wednesday.
Of the 15 illegal structures which were earmarked for demolition for violating CRZ regulations, four structures were demolished on Tuesday, while eight more structures will be demolished in the coming days.
Heavy machinery and labourers were deployed to demolish the structures, while the deputy collector, mamlatdar, panchayat secretary and a police team were stationed to maintain law and order during the demolition drive.
Aware that the demolition of their structures is inevitable, some owners took the initiative to dismantle parts of their structures.
It may be recalled that a petition was filed to challenge the construction of a former sarpanch of Arambol. When the hearing was taken up in court, there was a discussion of other illegal structures in the area. The court later passed an order to demolish the illegal structures.
Acting on the court’s directives, authorities began the task of demolishing structures.
Many locals expressed anger over the demolition of their structures. “Our children do not have government jobs. We built small structures in our premises to generate whatever business and livelihood during the tourist season,” lamented a local.
