Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said government figures indicate that as many as 4,500 of the 18,000-odd tourist taxis in Goa have already compiled and fitted themselves with speed governors.
Addressing a press conference, Parrikar questioned why it is that only taxis in Goa have a problem with speed governors.
“According to the RTO 4,500 taxis have fitted (speed governors). Across the country everywhere this law is applicable. In Delhi too, which is ruled by AAP, it is there. In Karnataka also it is applicable and nowhere have they given the time period of six months to fit the governors.
Goa is the only state where such leeway was offered,” Parrikar said.
Seeking to counter the “myth” that is being propagated, Parrikar said: “It is not Goa government law. It is the law of the central government, which is applicable to all states. So how can Goa be exceptionally different?”
Parrikar expressed confidence that the strike will slowly wither away.
