Five people were killed and as many were injured when a car struck two pedestrians before colliding with an oncoming container truck at Corlim on Monday afternoon at around 4 pm.
Among the killed included three occupants from the car, Natalia Pereira (62), Vrushali Bhoir (35) and her daughter Manashri Bhoir (4), while the other two were pedestrians, Luis Menezes (48) and Ida D’Silva e Queiroz (55), both from Corlim.
The five injured included the driver Shanal Pereira (38), his wife Rupa Pereira (35), daughter Savia Pereira (17), son Shannon Pereira (2) and Saurabh Bhoir (35). All the five were occupants of the car.
From initial investigations by the police, it was brought to light that Natalia was the mother of Shanal, while Vrushali was the wife of Saurabh and Manashri was their daughter.
Unconfirmed reports also suggested that the Pereira family were seen in Divar, while Shanal possessed a driving licence from Thane, which pointed to the possibility of them hailing from Thane-Maharashtra.
According to Old Goa police, the Maruti Suzuki SX4 car (MH-04-ET-3842) carrying five adults, one teenager and two young children, was travelling towards Old Goa and the container truck (DN-09-J-9100) was travelling towards Ponda. Both vehicles collided with each other just near the Indian Oil petrol pump.
Initially, people who had gathered in large numbers, faulted the truck driver as he fled from the accident site fearing backlash.
However, when the petrol pump owner Mallik later informed the police that his CCTV camera had captured the incident, the story took a U-turn and clearly showed that it was the four-wheeler driver who was at fault.

the road?
OLD GOA: While the CCTV footage cleared the air on who was at fault in the mishap, it still could not clear on what caused the car driver to lose control in the first place. When the car makes the appearance in the frame of the footage, it is clearly seen that it veers towards the centre of the road and some smoke billows out from the rear wheel, before it goes on to hit the pedestrians and then the truck. The question that is now being asked is whether the speeding car was trying to save someone or something, which could have possibly resulted in the driver losing control. This remains a mystery as there was nothing forthcoming from anybody. Meanwhile, confusion prevailed on the number of dead in the mishap. It was only after the police coordinated with their staff at GMC, that the confusion was put to rest.
