A video of the newly inaugurated 120-bedded Sub District Hospital at Chicalim being closed for operations only a day after it being inaugurated has gone viral on social media.
The hospital with modern amenities was inaugurated by Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane in the presence of Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho, Urban Development Minister Milind Naik, GSIDC Chairman Deepak Prabhu Pauskar along with MLAs Alina Saldanha and Carlos Almeida and other dignitaries on Friday.
However, a video uploaded on social by media convenor of NGO Goa First Parshuram Sonurlekar on Saturday morning showed that the the newly inaugurated hospital was closed with no staff present at the site.
The video showed that the main entrance was locked and there were no security guards as well. The new hospital wore a dessert look while the old Chicalim Cottage Hospital was still operational.
Sonurlekar questioned the legislators if the inauguration of the new hospital was a political gimmick.
“If the health Minister has inaugurated the new hospital and declared it open then why is it closed the next day itself? There is no one here. Opening of the hospital seems like an eyewash. Is it only because the code of conduct is approaching or is or to appease people for LS elections?” he asked. “The legislators have used loud sound systems to deliver speeches in a silence zone while there were ill patients in the chicalim cottage hospital. I request the health minister to look in the matter and start operations at the hospital soon,” Sonurlekar said.
The new 120-bedded hospital building has been constructed at a cost of Rs 27.95 crore. It will primarily serve the population of Chicalim, Vasco, Mormugao, Dabolim, Cortalim, Bogmalo and surrounding areas.
The new hospital is ground-plus-one structure and has a provision of adding another floor for future expansion.
