26 injured after private bus ferrying passengers hits car and turns turtle at Rawanfond

MARGAO

Around 26 passengers of an overcrowded Sanvordem-Margao bus, including 14 women, sustained injuries when the bus in which they were travelling turned turtle at Rawanfond early Wednesday morning after ramming against a Renault Duster car.

The injured passengers were immediately rushed to the Hospicio hospital for medical treatment in 108 ambulances. While the bus conductor Sachin Desai is shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital in  Bambolim with grievous injuries, around 10 passengers are still convalescing in Hospicio. The remaining 15 passengers were discharged after being administered first aid.

The occupants of the Duster car, identified as Anthony Borges and Pramila, who were heading to Chandor, sustained injuries and were also admitted to Hospicio.

The incident occurred when the ill-fated bus, while heading to Margao and reportedly speeding, rammed against the oncoming Duster car before turning turtle. The driver Krishna Naik was brought to the police station and questioned on the cause of the accident.

The police said they are investigating whether the speeding bus lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle before ramming against the oncoming car.

As the accident occurred on the main road near the 3MTR military camp at Rawanfond, military personnel along with locals rushed to the rescue of the injured passengers, who were trapped inside the bus.

Maina-Curtorim police station in-charge, PI Pravin Kumar Vast, said the driver, a resident of Panchwadi, will be arrested for rash and negligent driving resulting in injuries to passengers. “As per preliminary reports, the overcrowded bus was travelling at high speed resulting in the accident”, PI Vast said.
