Aam Admi Party volunteers burned effigies of BJP president Amit Shah and MLAs Subhash Shirodkar and Dayanand Sopte near the party office here on Wednesday in protest against what they termed “gutter politics” practiced by the two main political parties, BJP and Congress.
Before they made a bonfire of the effigies representing the BJP president, and the two MLAs who quit the Congress to join the BJP, the volunteers garlanded them with slippers and soundly trashed them to vent their frustrations.
They came down heavily on Shirodkar, Sopte and BJP for indulging in open horse trading, engineering defections and thus murdering democracy and back-stabbing the people’s mandate.
Speaking at the protest, AAP member Adv Ohm Stanley said the idea behind the protest was three-fold: One “  to give an opportunity to citizens to vent their frustrations on the effigies and a platform to condemn the open murder of democracy and people’s mandate.
Secondly, to demand a suitable amendment to the Anti-Defection law to keep pace with the new age conniving politician.
And thirdly, that candidates reduce their election promises on paper and swear an affidavit before asking people for their precious vote.
Said AAP Spokesperson Sidharth Karapurkar, “Today, we burn the effigies symbolizing victory over evil. This corrupt and morally defunct politics which has started to dominate our lives is an evil that’s eating into our democratic values. We hope with this act of burning, we cleanse our political system.”
South Goa AAP convenor Rodney Almeida said that people must ensure at the next election that they send all the incumbents packing and elect fresh, genuine leaders to bring back Goa from the precipice.
He gave a clarion call to the people of Goa to come forward and save Goa from the clutches of power-hungry politicians who are only interested in filling their pockets, exuding confidence that the people of Goa will give AAP an opportunity.
