The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday slammed the State government for the High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) fiasco which has inconvenienced thousands in the State and is likely to cause further trouble to the motorists given that the number plates fitted in October do not conform to specifications.
“The late Manohar Parrikar had branded the HSRP tender process a scam running into crores of rupees, which was paid as bribe to get the tender a few years ago. He had even ordered that an FIR be registered against the Digambar Kamat administration. But that appears to have been buried and a new scam seems to be in the making,” AAP convenor Elvis Gomes said at a press conference at the party headquarters.
He described the chaotic situation at RTOs as nothing but a result of attempts to satisfy the greed of a few. He said that the outcome of the FIR against various persons in the HSRP matter be made known to the public before another corruption scam engulfs the government.
Gomes said that forcing people to leave their work and endlessly wait in long queues was neither necessary nor desirable and alleged that the government was habitually pushing the aam aadmi to stand in queues wasting time and money as was witnessed recently in GMC for a mere job application.
The government should send another delegation to European countries to learn about fitting such vehicle number plates, he mocked.
Gomes pointed out that the rates of HSRPs in Delhi were Rs 69, 86, 213 and 220 for 2 wheelers, 3 wheelers, LMVs and HMVs respectively as against Rs 155, 203, 332, and 332 charged in Goa. He said that people should have been given the option to procure the plates online from any of the approved vendors in the country. He asked why despite charging almost double, additional charges were levied to fit the plates.
