A prominent city-based private hospital came under the scanner of the Margao Municipal Council on Friday evening after two gunny bags containing bio-medical waste was found disposed of at Monte Hill.
While Margao Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai mulled strict action against the hospital for violating the bio-medical waste disposal rules, there were no municipal officials around, including the Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik and the two sanitary inspectors, Viraj Arabekar and Sanjay Sanglekar to lodge a police complaint. While one of the sanitary inspectors claimed that he is holed up in Karwar, the second inspector maintained that he is on his way to Canacona for some personal work.
The end result being there was no municipal officer around to lodge a formal complaint with the police and bring the hospital owner to book.
Meanwhile, even as Chairperson Babita, who was holed up at Porvorim in connection with the road blockade on the Mhadei issue, told the municipal supervisors to do the needful, a close relative of the hospital owner was believed to have made his presence felt at the site and lifted away the gunny bags.
Sources in the know informed that doctors and other professionals staying in the Monte Hill area took cognizance of the disposal of the bio-medical waste in gunny bags, only to find that the bio-medical waste has come from the private hospital. “They called the MMC chairperson demanding stern action against the hospital owner to send a strong message and act as a deterrent for other clinics and hospitals that this is totally unacceptable in the city,” an official said.
While the residents were expecting the MMC to act and crack a whip against the hospital, the much awaited municipal action came a cropper for want of the concerned officials.
