With no action forthcoming from the SGPDA and the police, agitated  retail fish vendors descended at the wholesale fish market on Thursday  noon and physically confiscated baskets full of fish sold in retail at  the market.

A group of five fish vendors from the retail fish market  went to the wholesale fish market in goods carrier to confiscate the  fish baskets of the fish vendors in the market selling fish in retail.

They  were right on target as the retail fish vendors came across quite a  number of vendors selling fish in the wholesale fish market in retail.  Pouncing on the fish baskets, the retail vendors dumped the baskets and  the fish in their goods carriers and returned back to the retail market.

Retail  fish vendors operating in the PDA retail fish market told the media that business in the retail fish market has hit an all time low with retail  fish business going on unabated right under the nose of the authorities.  “We decided to crack a whip against the activity by ourselves after we  found that the PDA and the police were not prepared to clamp down on the  retail fish business in the wholesale fish market,” Fatima Cardozo told  the media.

Fearing that the retail fish vendors will have to one day  go with a begging bowl around to eke a living if the retail fish  business is not stopped forthwith, many a retail fish vendor have now  demanded shifting of the wholesale fish market away from the retail  market.

“How are we supposed to eke a living when retail sale of fish  is allowed in the wholesale fish market. The illegal activity is taking  place in the wholesale fish market right under the nose of the  authorities, but no action is forthcoming for reasons best known to the  authorities,” remarked another retail vendor Piedade Fernandes.
