Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha has assured traditional farmers of Sancoale to construct a sluice gate at Bandolem lake.
According to sources, around 50 aggrieved traditional farmers had earlier approached Saldanha with their grievances.
Farmers associated with Ille Bhaile Khazan Association (IBKA) had informed Saldanha that saline water would enter their fields regularly, making it difficult to undertake any cultivation.
IKBA members appealed to Saldanha to intervene and make provision to construct a sluice gate to benefit traditional farmers in Sancoale.
Saldanha on Monday along with Water Resources Department (WRD) officials and engineers inspected the Bandolem lake in Sancoale and assured farmers that a sluice gate would be taken up soon.
Speaking to media on Monday evening, Saldanha informed that she had received complains from farmers that fields were getting destroyed with saline waters.
Saldanha also informed that WRD engineers would prepare an estimate and the work on sluice gate would commence soon. “Our government is committed to protecting the rights of traditional farmers and fishermen. After an inspection, I have proposed to the WRD to prepare estimates for a new sluice gate to prevent saline waters from entering the fields. This proposed sluice gate at Bandolem lake will benefit over 200 traditional farmers in this area to cultivate their fields,” said Saldanha.
