Unattached St Cruz MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate was arrested by Goa Police late in the evening on Thursday, five hours after he deposed before the crime branch at Ribandar at around 3.10 pm accompanied by his wife, Taleigao MLA Jennifer Moserrate.

The mother of the minor girl, who is the second accused, has also been placed under arrest after she was detained at the women’s 
police station in Panaji for questioning.   
However, the third accused, the main conspirator and mediator who introduced the mother-daughter duo to Monserrate, is absconding.   
Former minister for education and currently unattached St Cruz MLA was taken for a medical check up at GMC and will be presented before Judicial Magistrate First Class, Panaji for remand where the police are likely to seek five to ten days custody.   
On Wednesday, Monserrate was booked by Panaji police on a complaint from a minor girl, native of Nepal and a resident of Monserrate’s constituency, alleging that she was trafficked by her mother and a neighbour ‘aunty’ to Monserrate for a sum of ` 50 lakh, who then sedated her before raping her between 6 pm and 11 am the next day.   
Confirming Monserrate’s arrest, acting Superintendent of Police (North) Karthik Kashyap stated, “As you are aware on the basis of the statement given by the victim in the presence of the Child Welfare Committee.
