Opposing any alliance with MLA Vijai Sardesai and his party in the forthcoming Assembly election, Fatorda Block Congress Committee members told AICC general secretary, Digvijai Singh, that the party should not have any truck with the Independent MLA.
Party workers also demanded a clarification from the AICC general secretary on whether the party would enter into an alliance with Vijai, as they accused the legislator for taking the Congress party backward by 10 years.
Addressing the AICC general secretary in the presence of GPCC president, Luizinho Faleiro, former MP Francisco Sardinha and MLA Pandurang Madkaikar at the South Goa district office during an interaction on Tuesday, Ethel Lobo said that alliances have only weakened the Congress party, pointing out that the footprints of the Congress party have been diminishing over the years.
“Congress workers from Fatorda have a fear that the Congress will tie-up with Vijai’s party in the coming election. It’s time the party leadership clears the air on the issue. Are we going to go forward? When he was in the party, Vijai had the Congress backward,” she said.
Citing an example of the recently held Carnival festival, Ethel drew Digvijai's attention on how a Congress leader spoke against the party in full public view.
“When leaders give such signals, what are we ordinary workers supposed to do? How will we go to the people? The leaders have to be strong. They have to lead by example,” she said, adding that Vijai had in the past not only destroyed the party across the state, but finished it in Fatorda. “Congress workers have been left in the lurch in Fatorda. The leadership has to come as one unit and strengthen the Congress,” she emphasised.
