Anjuna comunidade calls meet to discuss proposals for mega event

MAPUSA

As opposition mounts from residents of Anjuna and other North Goa villages against large-scale events in the region, the Anjuna comunidade has scheduled an Extraordinary General Body Meeting (EGBM) on October 27.

The meeting will address several proposals, including applications to hold major events in the area. Among the key agenda items is a proposal from Spectrum Events to host ‘TVS Motosol 2024,’ an application from Tribevibe Entertainment for a Bollywood event and a request from Spark Creations to organize an expo and music concert.

These events come at a time when many locals are pushing back against what they see as the commercialization of Goa’s culture and ecology.

The EGBM will also discuss pending payments related to events that took place in 2023-24, as well as ongoing legal cases before the High Court and Supreme Court.

In addition to event-related issues, the agenda includes discussions on land matters, such as regularised encroachments by the current and previous managing committees, illegal parking by taxi operators on comunidade land, and the mapping and surveying of areas where landfilling has occurred on both agricultural and commercial properties.

The meeting will also focus on concerns regarding comunidade tenanted fields, which are reportedly being sold and repurposed for commercial use, in violation of their original agricultural intent.

An application to establish a futsal ground will also be reviewed during the meeting.

This gathering comes amid increasing local resistance to mega events, with residents voicing concerns about the impact of such activities on Goa’s cultural heritage and environmental sustainability.
