As the State witnesses a rising number of road accidents and related fatalities, the government has roped in local governing bodies for creating road safety awareness in their respective villages and municipal areas, for which financial assistance of Rs 10,000 each will be provided. The initiative is part of the State Road Safety Week celebration from October 14“20.
In a communication to the Director of Panchayat and Municipal Administration, the Directorate of Transport has informed about the decision to observe State Road Safety Week (SRSW) through Road Safety Traffic Management Committees, constituted at the Village Panchayat and Municipality level, for which a sum of Rs 10,000 will be allotted to every local governing body.
The department has asked the Director of Panchayat and Municipal Administration to direct the panchayat and municipal bodies to organise various Road Safety activities/programmes in their areas to spread awareness amongst students and local communities about Road Safety and Traffic Management.
“We are confident that you will provide full cooperation and support to actively participate in this initiative to spread awareness amongst the local community about Road Safety and Traffic Management in order to curb road accidents in which innocent road users are losing their lives on Goan roads,” the transport department said.
In a bid to claim the financial assistance, the panchayat or municipality will have to certify a brief report of activities conducted, a statement showing total expenditure along with original bills of expenses, certified at the Village Panchayat/Municipality level by a competent authority (in duplicate), a pre-receipt, and a few photos showing banners in the background as well as activities conducted, with bank account details for crediting the amount up to Rs 10,000 within 30 days.
