April saw deficient rainfall in State compared to other parts of country

MAPUSA

The State reported deficient rain in the month of April compared to other parts of the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

With the mean temperature hovering around 33.8 degree Celsius, April was not as hot as yesteryears in the State.

“Comparatively cooler temperature and absence of strong westerly winds were the possible reasons for the deficient rainfall in April in Goa,” said Rajasree, a scientist with the IMD, Goa division.

Conversely, the State received a record 52 mm of unseasonal rainfall in April last year as a result of which mango, cashew and other crops were impacted across the State.

Interestingly, the IMD had predicted light rain and thundershowers in mid-April this year. But apart from cloudy skies there was no sign of much rainfall in the month.

On account of deficient summer rains several dams in the State have reported dipping water level. While the water resources department has assured that the water in dams were enough to supply drinking water for next 45 days, continuous dry weather could well lead to a water crisis in the State.

In the meanwhile, the IMD has said light rain/thundershowers were expected at isolated places on Friday. Similarly, light rain/thundershowers is expected very likely at isolated places from Mau 6 to 8.
