The Government Printing Press, a nearly 500-year-old entity, is seemingly running out of space and is now scouting for land to set up an adjunct press.
Inherited from the colonial rule era of the Portuguese, the press was first set up in Old Goa in the mid-sixteenth century before it was shifted to its present heritage premises in the heart of the capital city.
Now, it is scouting for land at any one of the industrial estates at Corlim, Kundaim, or Verna either for an outright buy or on lease to house a new press.
According to the tender floated by the State government’s Printing and Stationery Department, which manages the press, it is looking for around 1,300 to 3,500 square meters and has sought offers from parties who have legal title.
The government printing press is said to be the first press to be set up in Asia and until a couple of years ago operated on machines which were 150-200 years old. It now has modern printing machines.
