In a fervent display of community solidarity, residents of Assagao met once again on Sunday to vehemently oppose the establishment of a nightclub within their vicinity.
This collective action follows a recent decision by the villagers to stand against the encroachment of nightlife culture in their tranquil locale.
The locals have initiated a multifaceted campaign, incorporating both grassroots efforts and appeals to higher authorities, to thwart the proposed nightclub's inception.
Among their strategies, the villagers have organized a signature drive within the community and resolved to write to the local panchayat and other authorities, urging them to deny permission for the nightclub's operation.
Furthermore, the residents are mobilizing politically, intending to petition their local Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) and the Chief Minister to address the nuisance they anticipate from the establishment of such a venue. Additionally, they have escalated their concerns to the national level by planning to communicate directly with the Prime Minister's Office, highlighting the adverse effects of nightlife on the well-being of local residents and the student populace.
The catalyst for this renewed activism stems from the revelation by local resident Surendra Gad, who alerted fellow villagers to the impending threat posed by the nightclub's construction in a residential area, specifically identified as survey number 224/2 of the village.
Gad expressed apprehension regarding the potential disturbance to the peace and tranquility of the neighbourhood, citing anticipated public nuisance, parking congestion, and disruptive behaviour by patrons, including alcohol-induced altercations.
Moreover, Gad emphasized the detrimental impact on the nearby student community, particularly students from adjacent educational institutions such as DMC College and Fr Agnel's Ashram, who may be drawn to the nightclub's allure for social gatherings and celebrations.
Highlighting a common stratagem employed by nightclub proprietors, Gad elucidated how they often exploit legal loopholes by initially obtaining licenses for bars and restaurants, only to covertly transform these establishments into nightclubs, much to the chagrin of local residents.
“We have no objection if a local operates a bar and restaurant in the village and earns a living. But we will not allow a nightclub and that too in a residential area. We all know the ill-effects of nightlife. We have to stop this menace come what may,” Gad maintained.
In response to this imminent threat, the villagers have vowed to pursue various avenues of recourse, including appealing to the local panchayat to revoke any licenses granted to the nightclub owner.
Additionally, they plan to engage in proactive outreach efforts aimed at raising awareness among parents and students about the adverse effects of nightclub culture.
The steadfast determination exhibited by the residents of Assagao village underscores their unwavering commitment to preserving the sanctity of their community and safeguarding the well-being of its inhabitants against the encroachment of disruptive nightlife.
