Beaches get a major clean-up in Canacona

A massive beach-cleaning exercise was taken up in different parts of Canacona taluka to mark the birthday celebrations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.  

The beach cleanliness drive was organised along 12 beaches across Canacona taluka from 8 am onwards and they included Cabo-de-Rama, Nuvem, Matvemoll-Khola, Saleri in Khola village, Palolem, Colomb, Patnem and Kindlebhag in Canacona municipality, Talpona and Galgibaga in Poinguinim village, Polem in Loliem-Polem village and Agonda.  

Leading the ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’, an initiative of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the Canacona Municipal Council staged a Swachhta Rally from Char-Rasta along the Palolem Street before embarking on a cleanliness drive on the Beach.  

CMC Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar, councillors and municipal staff took part in the cleanliness drive and later took a pledge to Join the Fight for a garbage-free Canacona.  

Later, participation certificates were also presented to participants, which included some educational institutions, by Naikgaunkar, ex-CMC Chairperson and councillor Simon Rebello, Councillors Dhiraj Naikgaunkar, Narscisco Fernandes and others.  

School Students of Shri Shradhanand Vidyalaya (Poinguinim), Balram Residential High School (Amone), St Anthony HS (Galgibaga), Poinguinim Sarpanch Savita Tawadkar, panch members and Forest Department officials also took part in the beach cleaning at Galgibaga Beach..  

Councillor Shubham Komarpant and many of his supporters and ward members launched a beach cleaning drive at Patnem beach, while Agonda Sarpanch Fatima Rodrigues along with students of St Anne’s Institute, Agonda staged a cleanliness drive at Agonda Beach.  

Schools were the main participants at various beaches, including Galgibaga and Talpona, Polem in Loliem-Polem, while Canacona Block BJP Mandal President Vishal Dessai and various BJP Mandals, including Mahila and Yuwa party workers, also too part in the cleanliness drive.  

A Canacona police team led by Canacona Police Inspector Chandrakant Gawas conducted cleanliness drives at Agonda and Palolem beaches.  

The cleanliness drive at some beaches will continue over the next few days.
