The International Coastal Clean-Up Day was conducted by Indian Coast Guard in coordination with Ministry of Earth Sciences in the state on Saturday, as part of Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav/Puneet Sagar Abhiyan.
This event is one of the world’s largest one-day voluntary effort to clean the beaches.
The event was conducted concurrently in the beaches of Bogmalo, Baina, Velsao, Colva, Majorda and Miramar, wherein Coast Guard personnel, NCPOR, NSS/NCC volunteers, Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi, village panchayats, locals, IOCL staff, nearby hotel staff, village panchayats and enthusiastic volunteers joined hands for the noble cause and cleaned the
beaches.
The objective of the programme was to spread awareness on prevention of usage of plastics and pollution in the marine environment.
During the coastal clean-up event, removal of plastics, non-biodegradable debris and litter from shore/beaches was undertaken.
The cause was spread amongst the public, especially the younger generations about the impact of coastal pollution and necessity of coastal cleanup.
Around 600 participants formed part of the drive including Indian Coast Guard personnel.
