The mud embankment on the newly constructed bridge was washed away and a Belagavi-Goa highway stretch caved in after incessant rains lashed Khanapur-Londa and the ghats region on Sunday.
The mud embankment on the newly constructed bridge was washed away near Londa on the Belagavi-Goa NH748 due to heavy rains in the region over the past week.
Traffic has been diverted in the area resulting in a lot of inconvenience to locals and motorists.
Questions are also being raised about the quality of work as the people of the locality have been demanding immediate action against the contractor and the officials inspecting the quality of work.
Meanwhile, incessant rains have played havoc in Belgavi district causing floods all over the district and throwing life out of gear. The rivers and the rivulets were running above the danger mark.
As a preventive measure, Deputy Commissioner Dr Nitesh Patil declared a holiday for schools in Belagavi, Khanapur and Kittur taluks on Monday.
Accordingly, all the primary and secondary schools will remain shut on Monday and further decision will be taken based on the situation of rain on Monday, officials said.
