As a video showing a man mercilessly attacking a shop owner with a koita went viral on Thursday, the Fatorda police have confirmed that the incident had occurred on January 8 in the police station jurisdiction.
After the video went viral, various theories did the rounds, with reports doing the rounds that a truck driver and cleaner have been done to death, before the police confirmed that the incident had taken place on January 8 last.
Fortunately, the 38-year old victim, Dungaram alias Lalit Choudhary, a resident of Vidhyanagar-Borda, has survived the attack, with the police saying the victim is now reportedly out of danger.
The video shows two persons in a discussion inside a hardware shop before the man standing outside the counter, removing a huge koita and starts assaulting the shop owner. The victim tried to resist the attack, trying to block the blows from the sharp weapon, but finally fell down on the ground at the entrance, giving the accused the freedom to further assault with the weapon.
Fatorda police station in-charge, PI Ditendra Naik informed that the 38-year old shop owner, who has sustained multiple wounds on his body, has survived the brutal attack. “The victim is convalescing at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. The police have recorded his statements after he was declared fit to give a statement,” he said.
PI Ditendra said the accused person, Bharat alias Bhomaram Choudhary (43) has gone into hiding after the incident. “The accused hails from Rajasthan. After committing the assault, the accused had switched off his phone. A team was sent to Rajasthan as part of the investigations. Another team is heading to Bengaluru in search of the accused,” he said.
To a question, PI Ditendra informed that the incident occurred over some business issues between the accused and the victim. “They are alleged to be business partners, before the business partnership went awry,” he said, while saying the police is investigating into the incident.
When questioned why the police has registered a case under Section 326 of the IPC when the video shows the victim being assaulted with a koita, PI Ditendra said the FIR was registered soon after a complaint was lodged by the victim’s relative. “The section will be changed after the police receive the medical report and after the arrest of the accused,” he said. The police has recovered and attached the koita used in the assault.
