A 25-year old boy, declared brain dead, gave new lease of life to four persons, after the deceased family decided to donate his organs.
The organs- liver, heart and both the kidneys, were donated to two patients from Goa and one each from Delhi and Chennai.
Addressing a press conference, GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said that the deceased, who hails from Belagavi had met with an accident in Goa on September 13 and had suffered severe head injuries.
The patient was declared brain dead on Thursday night by GMC Hospital’s Brain Stem Death Certification Panel.
Bandekar said that as per the waiting list maintained for organ recipients at state, regional and national level, one kidney was donated to a 31-year-old at GMC who was on dialysis, second kidney will be transplanted to a 45-year-old patient at Healthway Hospital.
He said that the heart has been allocated to a patient from MFM Hospital Chennai while liver had been sent to Army Hospital in Delhi.
Bandekar said that the retrieved organs were transported by 108 Ambulance in the presence of Green Corridor created by Traffic Cell Goa Police from Goa Medical College, Bambolim to the Dabolim airport and Healthway Hospital.
“This is the fourth deceased donor organ donation program under the aegis of SOTTO Goa,” Bandekar said.
He explained that Goa has transplant facilities for kidney but not for heart and liver as of now.
