Burglaries in Benaulim under the Colva police station jurisdiction in recent days has left the people baffled, with miscreants successfully targeting residential houses in the village.

Two such instances have come to light within a space of one month, wherein miscreants had barged into the houses by breaking open the doors to commit the theft.

In the instant case reported at Pulvaddo-Benaulim on Monday morning, the house of a newspaper vendor was burgled by unknown persons when he had gone out to his place of business near Maria hall to sell newspapers.

What has baffled the owner Dilip Amonkar as well as the residents of the locality was that the burglary has taken place in broad daylight between 11 am and 1 pm on Monday, with the miscreants lifting away cash and other items all amounting to around Rs 4.79 lakhs.

Take note, unknown miscreants had burgled the Amonkar’s neigbouring house around a month ago, with the miscreants laying their hands on household items.

Amonkar told The Goan that he had as usual gone to sell newspapers on Monday morning and returned home for tea and to take medicine. “I went out again by locking the house at around 11 and returned home at 1 pm, only to find the door locked from inside”, he said.

His worst fears came true when he went towards the rear side of his house, only to find the door open.

Amonkar said the accused lifted away Rs four lakh cash, which he had brought home from a private party, besides an amount of Rs 35,000 of the newspapers and another Rs 22,000 of some religious organization.

He pointed out that the miscreants have lifted away mobile and watches, besides utensils and five sarees belonging to his wife and daughter.

To a question, Amonkar suspected the burglary to be the handiwork of a lady involved in collecting scrap. “This same women was seen by some residents after the neighbouring house was burgled a month ago. She comes with a vehicle to collect the scrap”, he said, adding that he would identify the women if the police manage to nab her.

To a question, he said the police did not requisition the sniffer dog nor finger print experts to assist in the investigations, only hoping that the Colva police manage to achieve a breakthrough in the case.
