Women police to probe gang-rape case at Benaulim

MARGAO
The Benaulim gang rape case has been handed over to the Women’s police station on Wednesday.

Colva police station in-charge, PI Anand Shirodkar on Wednesday handed over the case and the accused persons to the women’s police station for further investigations in the case.

While many an eyebrow was raised over the decision to hand over the case to the women’s police station, more so after the Colva police has nabbed the accused and charged the four persons for gang rape, senior police officers said the decision has been taken since there’s no senior women police officer at the Colva police station to probe the case. “The Colva police has a lady Police Sub-inspector, who cannot handle the case since it involves gang rape on two minor victims by the four persons”, an senior police officer said.

Women’s right activist, AudaViegas also welcomed the decision to transfer the Benaulim gang rape case to the Women’s police station. “Since it is sensitive case involving gang rape of two minor girls by four accused, it is incumbent on the police to appoint a senior women police officer to take the investigations to the logical conclusion”, Auda said.

Sources pointed out that the Colva police had achieved a major breakthrough in the rape of the two minors when the men-in-uniform had managed to arrest the four accused persons within hours of the complaint lodged by the victims.

While the police had initially registered a case of rape, besides other offenses such as extortion, assault, impersonation against the four persons, the police later invoked the provision of gang rape of minors.
