A daylight burglary on Monday morning sent shock waves in Cuncolim after miscreants struck gold in a residential house located in a thickly populated area at Buinsa, decamping with gold ornaments worth Rs 13-14 lakh.
The incident occurred between 10.30 am to 11.30 am when the owner Debora Dias had headed to Margao for some personal work, only to find the house burgled after she returned home at around 11.40 am. At the time of the incident, her mother, who is deaf, was inside the house.
Senior police officials, including Cuncolim PI Sudesh Naik rushed to Buinsa soon after the daring daylight burglary came to light. A police dog was immediately pressed into service to help obtain clues, but in vain. Finger print experts were also roped in to assist in the investigations.
Debora informed that a before she had left for Margao, a technician had come to the house to repair the washing machine. “I had left the house at around 10.30 am to go to Margao. I returned back with my daughter from school at 1.40 am, when I was questioned by my mother why I had kept the cupboard open. Initially, I thought that a mouse must have brought the clothes down from the cupboard, but I clearly remembered having locked the cupboard and the keys kept under the mattress. When I saw the locker, it was found open and the gold and jewelry missing”, Debora said.
She said all the gold ornaments belonging to her, daughter and husband, who is working on board the ship, have been lifted away by the culprits. Though the police has pegged the total value of the stolen items to around Rs eight lakh, Debora said the gold ornaments is woth around Rs 13-14 lakh.
The Cuncolim police informed that two persons, including the washing machine technician, who had visited the house on Monday morning would be interrogated in connection with the burglary.
