Barely seven months after a woman was allegedly held captive by her family members in Candolim for several years, another shocking incident has been reported in Sakhali where another woman was allegedly confined in inhumane conditions for about 25 years.
The NGO Savera along with Bicholim police on Monday rescued the 47-year-old women, who was held captive in a room at Bhandarwada-Sakhali for about 25 years.
Speaking to reporters at Mapusa, Savera President Tara Kerkar said they had received information on Saturday that a woman, who is a graduate, had been held captive in a house at Bhandarwada.
“Accordingly, we raided the house along with Bicholim PI Sanjeev Dalvi and his team. We rescued the woman and later sent her to the District Hospital Mapusa for medical treatment,” Kerkar said.
“The woman was locked in the room of a house. The windows of the rooms were closed and electricity connection to the room was disconnected.”
“The woman was locked in the room when she was 22 years, fearing that she would elope with an unknown person. She has now turned 47 and had only one kurta on her body for several years.”
“When we questioned the family members, they told us that her mental condition was not stable and she was undergoing treatment. But when we asked them to show the medical documents, they failed to do so,” Kerkar added.
“Doctors have told us that her health condition is improving. On receiving medical reports from doctors, Bicholim police will register an offence against the family members,” informed Kerkar.
