Burning issue: Margao fair waste disposed by burning

MARGAO
Who has put fire to the tonnes of waste on the SGPDA grounds generated during the 12-day Old Market feast fair?

While curtains had come down on the fair on Sunday, the waste generated during the 12-day event remained on the ground till date. Wednesday, however, saw the waste being set on fire, raising serious questions over the disposal of the waste by burning, an activity banned by the National Green Tribunal.

In fact, questions are also being raised why the Margao Municipal Council did not clear the waste from the SGPDA grounds or whether the civic body did not lift away the garbage over the issue of payment of fees.

Eyewitnesses pointed out that unscrupulous elements set the waste on fire after it was found lying on the ground for the last many days, with no sign of disposal by the local authorities.

Meanwhile, taking cognizance of the disposal of the waste by burning, the Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has appealed to citizens of Margao not to put fire in the open which are a health and environmental hazard.

The CO has issued a note after citizens complained to the MMC upon sighting MMC staff and public openly putting fires to burn plastic and other waste after the stalls were removed at the fair near SGPDA grounds.

The CO has appealed to the citizens of Margao that the MMC has designated staff and vehicles to collect city waste and requested the public not to put open fires which are a hazard to all.
