Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has called on the youth of Goa to unite communities and dispel “man-made darkness” this Diwali and emphasised the importance of spreading love and harmony across all sections of society during the festival of lights.
“These days, there is man-made darkness in Goa. We need to spread the bond of love among all sections of the people in the State. The best way to do it is by letting the light shine bright in every home this Diwali,” said Lobo, subtly referencing recent controversial remarks made against Saint Francis Xavier by Subhash Velingkar.
The coastal MLA had earlier said that the comments were part of a conspiracy to divert attention from ongoing protests against land conversion and to stoke communal unrest.
Lobo urged the youth to participate in the upcoming Akash Kandil contest in Parra, part of the Diwali celebrations.
The popular festival, organised by the Parra Citizens Forum Association, will take place on October 30 at Jackni-vaddo (Parra Tinto), opposite the local polyclinic.
The event, which is in its 10th year, features two competition categories: an all-Goa contest and one specific to the Calangute-Siolim constituency.
Pradip Morraskar, the event organiser, announced that the first prize in the all-Goa category will be Rs 30,000, while the top prize for the Calangute-Siolim contest will be Rs 25,000.
Both winners will also receive trophies.
Morraskar also revealed that the number of consolation prizes has been increased to 35, each worth Rs 6,000, ensuring every entry will be acknowledged with an award.
Joining Lobo at the press conference were Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo, Parra Sarpanch Chandu Harmalkar and other local leaders, who encouraged wide participation in the event as a gesture of togetherness and celebration.
