CANACONA
Following precautionary measures to control the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, authorities have decided to call off Shigmo celebrations scheduled in Canacona on Sunday.
Incidentally, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, while chairing a high-powered meeting in the capital, had placed the onus on local Shigmo committees to decide the fate of the celebrations in their respective areas.
At an emergency meeting chaired by Canacona Municipal Council Chief Officer Pritidas Gaonkar on Saturday evening, it was decided to cancel the celebrations scheduled for Sunday evening, in view of an advisory to avoid mass gatherings in the State.
Canacona is a tourist destination and its location along the state’s southernmost border with Karnataka could make it vulnerable to the spread of coronavirus, Gaonkar is reported to have stated at the meeting.
He stated that the huge influx of tourists and travellers along the Polem border could contribute to the spread of the virus if many people from various locations are allowed to mingle at a large gathering.
Keeping these considerations in mind, it was decided to cancel Shigmo celebrations in Canacona scheduled on Sunday.
Following the decision, ongoing preparations to erect the pandal and other arrangements, including decorations, etc were stopped, amid assurances to reimburse the expenses incurred for the celebrations.
