A major safety scare was reported at Dabolim on Friday afternoon after a thick iron rod reportedly fell from ongoing flyover construction work and landed on a passing car, damaging its headlights and bumper.
The incident could have turned fatal had the heavy rod landed on a pedestrian or two-wheeler rider passing below the construction site. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the incident has raised questions over the safety measures being followed at the site.
Locals said the fall of such a heavy construction material from an elevated structure was a serious concern, particularly as the flyover is being built over a road regularly used by motorists and pedestrians.
According to residents, the contractor carrying out the flyover work has allegedly failed to put adequate safety measures in place, including safety nets, to prevent construction material from falling onto the road.
The damage to the car has highlighted the seriousness of the lapse, with residents pointing out that the rod could have struck a pedestrian, cyclist or two-wheeler rider, causing serious or even fatal injuries. Locals have demanded immediate action against the contractor and urged the authorities to inspect the site and verify whether all mandatory safety precautions are being followed.
They said construction agencies must not be allowed to compromise public safety while carrying out major infrastructure projects, especially when work is being undertaken above an active road.
Residents have also called for proper safety nets, barricading and other protective measures to prevent construction material, tools or debris from falling onto the road.
The Friday afternoon incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by people travelling below ongoing flyover construction and prompted locals to demand stricter monitoring of the work.
