Cardinals meet Modi on papal visit to India

A group of cardinals representing the Church in India met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, to discuss the proposed visit of Pope Francis to India and steps for the release of Father Tom Uzhunallil who was taken captive by the terrorists in Yemen.

Cardinal Baselios Cleemis (President of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India), Cardinal George Alancherry (Major Archbishop of the Syro Malabar Church) and Cardinal Oswald Gracias (President of Conference of the Catholic Bishops of India) met the prime minister at his office in the Parliament.

The team of cardinals submitted requests for taking immediate steps for the release of Fr Uzhunallil who was taken captive by the terrorists in Yemen. The prime minister assured the cardinals of necessary and immediate actions to be taken for his release by terrorists.

The prime minister also informed the cardinals that the government holds a favourable attitude towards the visit of Pope Francis in India.

The team of cardinals assured the prime minister that the Christian churches would continue their support towards the integral growth of the nation.
