MARGAO
All eyes are focused on the Commissioner of the Corporation of the City of Panjim, Sanjit Rodrigues following his appointment as the presiding officer over the special meeting of the Margao Municipal Council called on November 22 to elect a new chairperson.
The role of the Presiding Officer comes into play whenever the election is a closely-fought contest, which the forthcoming election might indeed turn out to be thanks to the fact that neither the Goa Forward or the Congress or the BJP have the required numbers in the 25-member civic body.
Already questions are being raised in the corridors of the civic body on whether the presiding officer will go for a secret ballot or decide the next chairperson by a show of hands.
Officials in the know say that while no confidence motions are normally decided by a show of hands and a secret ballot is employed for election of a new chairperson, it is the Presiding Officer who takes a call on the mode by which the elections are held.
