In an interesting development that has raised many an eyebrow in the corridors of the Margao Municipal Council, the notice of the special meeting called to hold elections for the vacant post of chairperson on November 22 is silent on the time frame for scrutiny of nomination papers and withdrawal.
A glance at the notice of the meeting issued by Director of Urban Development, Dr Tariq Thomas revealed there’s no mention of the scrutiny of the nomination papers received from the prospective candidates nor the time for withdrawal of the nomination papers.
The notice states that nomination papers for the office of the chairperson may be delivered to the MMC Chief Officer at his office at any time before noon on November 21.
This implies that prospective candidates can file their nomination papers for the vacant post till Thursday noon.
While the notice states that the special meeting to elect the chairperson will take place on November 22 at 11.30 am, scrutiny of nomination papers and withdrawal of the nomination papers does not find any mention in the notice.
Sources in the know informed that the discrepancy in the notice of the meeting has been brought to the notice of the Chief Officer, with officials saying the Director of Urban Development will have to make the necessary changes in the election process.
