Former chief minister Ravi Naik on Saturday criticized the Central government for boasting of works initiated by the erstwhile Congress government (UPA), adding that the BJP had done nothing for society.

He was addressing a function organised by the Ponda Block Congress Committee to observe the death anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in Shigmotsav hall-Ponda.

Block President John Pereira, Ritesh Naik, Ashok Naik, Arun Gudekar, Nilkant Naik, Jyoti Gaonkar, Diksha Naik and others were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Ravi Naik said that Rajiv Gandhi had done a lot of work to empower youth and women.

“Youth got voting rights at the age of 18 only due to efforts of Rajiv Gandhi. Reservation for women in politics was also done by him. Hence, we now see several women in big posts in politics,” Naik said.

“The railway routes commissioned by this government in the northern region of the country are being credited to BJP, though the foundation stones were laid by Congress leaders. The whole idea was initiated by the Congress to connect the northern regions. But BJP has now jumped to take the credit,” Naik said.

The former chief minister also stated that development in the area of information and technology was also due to the vision of Rajiv Gandhi.
