MARGAO
A delegation of residents of Chandor on Friday submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant with a plea to revoke the construction licence issued to K K Constructions in the village.
In the memorandum, the delegation led by social activist John Douglas Coutinho reminded the Chief Minister that he was kind enough to state on the floor of the Goa Legislative Assembly that Chandor, the ancient capital of Goa will be declared a heritage village to safeguard its character.
While saying that the government is yet to notify Chandor as a heritage village, they, however, pointed out to their disbelief and consternation, a mega project consisting initially of 28 dwellings which will eventually go up to 84 dwellings on its completion, was given the go ahead, without having proper access.
“The road is only 3.5 mts with no required turning radius of nine mts. Other vital STP safeguards are also not in place. Also, this will change the entire demography of this small village,” the memorandum stated.
Reminding that the Chief Minister was kind enough to stall similar devastating project in Sanquelim, the memorandum stated, “We shall be indebted to you if you help save our small village from this mega project, and save small cohesive existence of our villagers.”
Further reminding that the local MLA and Leader of the Opposition, had raised the issue in the Legislative Assembly and the TCP Minister had assured him on the floor of the House that the project would be stopped forthwith, the delegation, however, said the assurance has not been met to this date.
“The magnitude of this project, once completed, will devour the fragile ecosystem of the village and deplete its meagre resources,” the memorandum stated, while requesting the Chief Minister to revoke all the licences given for the project.
