PANAJI
Eminent scientist Raghunath Mashelkar, who was felicitated with the Gomant Gaurav Award at a ceremony in Panaji on Thursday, highlighted the need for science and research to benefit society.
The event was jointly organised by the MIT World Peace University and the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Industries Minister Mauvin Godinho, Rahul Karad, and GCCI president Pratima Dhond were present.
In his address, Dr Mashelkar paid an emotional tribute to his mother, crediting her values and sacrifices for shaping his life and career. He recalled how she consistently encouraged him to study and serve the poor, despite having never attended school herself.
“My mother never went to school, but she always urged me to study. Even after I earned my PhD, she wanted me to keep learning. This award is dedicated to her,” he said.
He added that her guidance inspired his journey from hardship to global recognition, and continues to influence his work even today.
Mashelkar further noted that the Anjani Foundation, established in his mother’s memory, carries forward her ideals by using science and technology for social welfare. “We focus on creating innovative products and services that benefit society. People’s goodwill is our true wealth,” he said.
He also shared his vision of Goa in 2035 as harmonious, cultured, prosperous, and well-governed.
Sawant described the award as a matter of pride for all Goans and announced that a low-cost medical testing strip developed by the Anjani Foundation will soon be available in the State, enabling ten tests in ten minutes for Rs 100.
