Speaking at the National Fish Farmers Day 2026 programme, the Chief Minister highlighted the contribution of the fishing community to the State's economy and food security. “Goa's traditional fishermen and fish vendors are an integral part of our economy. A large number of women associated with the fishing sector have also participated today and were provided traditional fish kits,” Sawant said.
Sawant attended the programme in the presence of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar and senior officials, where he lauded the contribution of fish farmers, fishermen and other stakeholders towards strengthening Goa's Blue Economy.
During the event, Sawant launched the Financial Assistance Scheme for Setting up Mud Crab Culture Units in Goa and the revised Financial Assistance Scheme for Fish Vendors to promote scientific aquaculture, value addition and sustainable livelihoods. He also distributed sanction letters and various benefits to more than 500 beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and State Government schemes.
Reaffirming the government's commitment to the traditional fishing community, Sawant said the Fish Seller Cards, along with modern infrastructure, improved market access and new opportunities in crab farming, ornamental fisheries, shellfish culture and aquaculture, would help strengthen the sector.
He also encouraged the youth to explore fisheries as a modern, technology-driven enterprise with significant potential for entrepreneurship and employment.
