CMC CO compares Covid fight to Goa Revolution

CMC CO compares Covid fight to Goa Revolution

CANACONA

Stating that Goans are fighting yet another war, this time to defeat coronavirus, Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chief Officer Udhay Prabhudesai called on people to be united in the war to defeat Covid just like people were united in their revolt against Portuguese rule in 1946 and eventually defeated colonial rule.

Prabhudesai was speaking at the Goa Revolution Day observed by CMC at the Hutatma Smarak at Chaudi in the presence of CMC Chairperson Simon Rebello, Dy Chairperson Amita Pagi and most councillors.

“The spark lit by Goa Revolution Day on June 18, 1946, brought unity among Goans and led to the liberation of Goa. Similarly if the people of Goa are united in the war against coronavirus, we will collectively win this war too,” he said.

Rebello said Canacona has several freedom fighters, including Keshav Bhat and Parshuram Acharya, and added that the Hutatma Smarak has been erected at Chaudi in honour of the heroes of Goa’s liberation.

Incidentally, two councillors -- Hemant Naikgaunkar and Narcisco (Nadin) Fernandes -- in the present CMC are sons of freedom fighters.

“Let us be united in the fight to defeat the Covid pandemic and emerge victorious just like the uprising led by Manohar Lohia and others led to the liberation of Goa,” said Rebello.

Former minister Ramesh Tawadkar and a few councillors also spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, CMC Chairperson Simon Rebello laid a wreath at the Hutatma Smarak and all present observed a moment of silence in honour of Goa Liberation heroes.
