As the government has rejected the demand of four convicts to be released for their good conduct who are serving life imprisonment in the infamous Mandar Surlakar murder case, the four convicts have now appealed to the High Court challenging the government order not to release them.
The next hearing on the petition will be held on July 1. The government has to file a reply in the case before the next hearing.
It can be recalled that the State Sentence Review Board headed by the Chief Secretary has recommended to remit the sentence of Rohan Pai Ghungat, Nafiyaj Sheikh, Shankar Tiwari, and Jovita Rayan Pinto who were convicted in the infamous Mandar Surlakar murder in 2006. However, Children’s court in March 2021 has refused the release of the convicts.
Following the orders of the Children court, the government has issued an order that the four convicts cannot be released.
Now, the accused have challenged the State government as well as Children’s court orders before the High Court of Bombay in Goa and have demanded that both orders should be cancelled.
