Indian Coast Guard on Friday rescued 19 crew members who were in distress in a sinking merchant ship MT Parth off the Ratnagiri coast.
The Coast guard in a press release said the Indian Coast Guard ship Sujeet, while on routine patrolling in area, received a distress call at about 10.45 am from MT Parth, an Africa flagged vessel of 102 mtr in length, 80 nautical miles from Mormugao Port, about flooding in the vessel.
“On receipt of distress call, the ship immediately proceeded for rescue despite the rough seas and strong winds. In addition, ICGS Apoorva and a CG Dhruv helicopter was also diverted to render assistance to the distress vessel.”
“The ship rendered assistance and rescued all 19 crew who had abandoned the ship in a liferaft. The ship is bringing all the rescued crew to Goa and is likely to arrive on September 18 and they will be handed over to the coastal police Vasco for further medical management and other formalities,” the press note added.
