Coastal Anjuna which houses a chunk of hotels and guesthouses received a huge relief after the inauguration of the new 33/11 (1x10) MVA electricity substation on Tuesday.
At least 6,000 consumers stand to benefit as the new substation is expected to supply uninterrupted power supply in the village.
“Anjuna is a popular tourist hub and this work will go a long way to alleviate the power problem in the village. A new substation was one of the major demands in the coastal area as locals have been facing a lot of power-related issues especially during the tourist season,” said former WRD minister and Siolim MLA, Vinod Paliencar, who inaugurated the new substation as Power Minister Nilesh Cabral had to skip the function due to some emergency.
Anjuna Sarpanch Savio Almeida, panchayat members of Anjuna and surrounding villages and senior engineers of the electricity department were present on the occasion.
Paliencar hoped that people in Goa and particularly from Anjuna will be able to enjoy a successful tourist season this year.
“I pray for divine intervention so that the pandemic gets wiped off from this earth and people of Goa and the world may be able to lead a normal life ahead,” he said.
The 33/11 (1x10) MVA capacity power substation project has been set at a cost of Rs 5.75 crore on land provided by Anjuna comunidade.
According to Anjuna Sarpanch Savio Almeida with the setting up of the substation part of the long-pending dream of the village has become successful.
“We have a lot of hotels along this belt. It’s a small substation and will solve part of the problem. But if we get the Baddem substation it will be a big relief to us and the people of Siolim,” Almeida said.
He appreciated the tireless efforts put in by the staff of the electricity department and the patience of the locals while the work to lay the underground cable was taken up to set up the substation.
“The villagers have been very cooperative while the work was being undertaken. We can make Anjuna one of the best villages in Goa with such support from locals,” he said.
Superintending Engineer, North Goa, Stephen Fernandes lauded the efforts put in by the locals to reconstruct the damaged power infra during the recent cyclone Tauktae.
He said several villagers worked hand in hand to pull the wires or to hold the ladders while the department officials were on the job.
He also assured to impress on the government to set up a bigger substation in Baddem, Assagao which will cater to several villages of Siolim constituency.
