A head-on collision between two cars at Vanxem-Loutolim on Monday evening claimed one life, left one in a critical condition and four injured.

The critically injured driver of the Maruti Baleno car Amar Naik has been shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, and the remaining are convalescing at the Hospicio hospital in 

Margao.

Maina-Curtorim PI Gurudas Kadam informed that the head-on collision between the two cars took place just 200 meters away from the Borim bridge toll checkpoint on 

the Cortalim-Loutolim bypass at Vanxem.

He said the accident occurred when Amar Naik, the driver of the Baleno car, which was proceeding from Cortalim to Borim allegedly drove the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner.

“When the vehicle reached near the three Cross Chapel, Vanxem, it rammed against the oncoming Maruti-Alto car while overtaking another vehicle,” he described.

Police said the driver of the Maruti car, Francisco A Fernandes (57), a resident of Panchwadi-Ponda, died on the spot. The accident caused injuries to other occupants of the Maruti car, including Richard Fernandes and Monica Fernandes. The deceased, along with his family members, was proceeding to the Dabolim airport to pick up his elder son, who had come from abroad.

Amongst the injured from the Maruti Baleno car driven by Amar Naik were Francis Fernandes, Akshay Suryakant Kinlekar and Sanvi Naik.
