Come clear on coconut tree amendment: Vijai to CM

Demanding that Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar to clear on Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni’s statement that he was not consulted by the government before bringing the coconut tree amendment, Independent MLA Vijai Sardesai on Tuesday said the disclosure has only exposed the government that the amendment was brought to satisfy vested interests.

Addressing the media, the Fatorda MLA said the outgoing AG’s stand assumes significance as it only goes to show that the amendment was not vetted before amending the Preservation of Trees Act. “If the AG was not consulted before bringing the amendment, the CM and other ministers should tell the Goan public whom did they consult before taking the decision,” Vijai said, suspecting hanky panky over the manner in which the government had acted in haste in the matter.
The Independent MLA said that the people of Goa have lost complete faith in the BJP-led government ruling the state. “There’s a complete trust deficit this present government is facing in the state. The government has been shifting goal posts on every issue. On the Ravindra Velip case, the government first denied the assault in jail, but later appointed a magisterial inquiry. The CM went into denial mode on the lathicharge on ramponkars, but set up a magisterial inquiry to probe the incident. This only goes to show that the government is shifting goal posts every time, leaving the people to lose faith in the government,” he said.
Sardesai has also written to the CM with a plea to postpone the commencement of the academic year for the regular Bachelor course to July 25 in view of the NEET examination scheduled on July 24.

But the glaring inconsistencies put forth by the defence are indeed a matter of concern. The public prosecutor could not defend the government after the defence brought out the inconsistencies,” Vijai told the…
